Amenti brings expressive dance, psychological inquiry, ritual and collective experience into the same room. Its work asks what becomes possible when movement has space for the parts of ourselves we usually edit: strength, awkwardness, tenderness, anger, play, uncertainty.
For Onizal, that breadth is compelling. A dance can hold more than one mood. There can be pleasure in moving beautifully, and there can be value in a gesture that feels unfamiliar or unfinished. The important question is whether the dancer has room to discover their own expression.
A collective, a method, an artistic practice
Amenti is the wider platform. The Amenti MoveMeant Method, often abbreviated AMM, is its named movement approach. Workshops, longer experiences, online study and performances are different ways the platform shares its work. Understanding that distinction helps when choosing an event: an artistic performance and a participatory immersion offer very different experiences.
The collective’s own account identifies Gil Gomes Leal, known as The Grid, as founder and artistic director, and Elia Vitadamo as co-founder, general director and creative producer. Gil’s background includes experimental dance and the hip-hop battle scene; Elia brings dance and creative production. Those artistic roots matter to how we understand the work.
Amenti was presenting its method publicly in Rotterdam by June 2018, when Nieuwe Instituut hosted Dancing Through Layers. That record gives us a documented point in its history without assigning a speculative founding year.
The cultures behind the movement
Hip-hop and street-dance expression belong near the beginning of this story. Removing them and describing Amenti only as spiritual movement would obscure the living dance cultures that inform it. Rhythm, individual expression and the energy of moving among other people are part of the background its creators name.
Amenti also uses psychological and spiritual language. Its FAQ connects its name with the Halls of Amenti and a contemporary interpretation of Egyptian symbolism. We understand that as the collective’s chosen imagery and philosophy. It does not establish that AMM is an unchanged ancient Egyptian dance practice.
An image can be artistically useful without requiring every participant to share the same belief. When approaching a workshop, it helps to ask how the teacher uses symbolic language: as a prompt for exploration, a story to inhabit, or a framework participants are expected to accept.
Seven layers of attention
The method’s public framework names seven layers. Each opens a different area of inquiry:
- Physicality: the body’s material foundations and grounding.
- Sensations: feeling and emotional experience.
- Power: drive, influence and the relationship with authority.
- Connection: relationships and boundaries.
- Vibration: voice and expression.
- Symbols: images, archetypes and meaning.
- Innerstanding: observation and being.
The framework connects movement with psychological and symbolic exploration. Amenti describes group witnessing, physical prompts and expressive intensity among its ways of working.
Our reading is to approach these layers as invitations to notice. A label can make a question easier to explore; it cannot tell a teacher everything about the person in front of them. The seven layers also remain distinct from Onizal’s five phases, which organise the flow of an event.
For example, a participant exploring power might become curious about how much space they occupy. One person could discover a larger movement; another could notice the strength of becoming quiet. Those are illustrative possibilities, rather than instructions from the AMM curriculum or outcomes a facilitator should demand.
What an experience may involve
Amenti’s experiences page separates workshops, immersions, retreats, Exchances, The Antidote and performances. Longer study and a music-led gathering are not interchangeable. Read the description of the particular offering, including who leads it and what participation involves.
A workshop can introduce an aspect of the method. An immersion or retreat provides a longer setting for exploration. A performance belongs to the collective’s artistic work. The public overview does not establish one sequence, duration or level of intensity shared by every event.
For a first visit, useful details are concrete: how much instruction there is, whether reflection or discussion is included, how music is used, and whether the session involves touch, vocal expression or working in front of others. These questions help translate an evocative event description into a choice you can make.
If you are attracted by the music and physical expression, a shorter introduction may help you discover whether the teaching approach suits you. If you want sustained study, look closely at the learning structure and support offered rather than assuming that more days automatically means more suitable work.
Participation and personal choice
Expressive work can make people feel exposed. Being invited to show a stronger or less familiar part of yourself is different from being pushed to disclose private experiences. Before joining, clarify how opting out, taking a pause and returning to the room work in practice.
Ask about the physical setting as well: floor access, seating, sound levels, movement demands and possible adaptations. An invitation open to many kinds of people still needs specific answers about access. Tell the organiser what would make participation workable for you.
Amenti uses language of healing and transformation in its own presentation. For a participant, the useful starting point is the actual activity and the competence of the person holding it. This profile introduces an artistic and movement practice; it does not turn those promotional claims into a promise about your health.
You can also have an ordinary experience. Enjoying a rhythm, noticing discomfort, feeling curious or deciding something is not for you are all useful information. A dramatic emotional response is not a requirement for taking the work seriously.
What this brings to Onizal
Permission for a wider emotional range. We want The Onizal Dance to make room for what is present. Amenti gives us a valuable reference for expression that includes complexity. A facilitator can welcome pleasure and intensity while leaving room for ambiguity, rest and silence. The music should not instruct everyone to feel the same thing.
An intention that remains open. Our Intention chapter offers a word to carry into the dance. Amenti’s breadth reminds us to let that word evolve in experience. A person who arrives wanting confidence might discover that what they need today is a gentler pace. The intention serves the dancer.
Expression through more than shape. Our Voice chapter explores humming, vowels and sound while moving. There is a meaningful affinity with Amenti’s interest in expression, but the Onizal exercise has its own preparation and cues. It is not an AMM lesson. Sound remains optional; loudness is not a measure of honesty.
Room for contrasting qualities. In Duality, dancers explore beat, melody and their combination. The wider question is how structure and freedom can coexist in one body. We can investigate different qualities without assigning them to genders or assuming that a strong movement reveals a fixed personality.
Credit with precision. Our Lineage chapter invites acknowledgement of the people and traditions that carry the dance. Here that means naming Amenti’s creators and dance roots, and distinguishing an editorial influence from personal training or permission to teach the method.
Where to continue
Start with Amenti’s own descriptions, then compare them with the actual workshop you are considering. The Amenti Academy is its online learning entry point. Check the current syllabus and who teaches it; access to lessons and preparation to facilitate others are different questions.
Within this directory, Authentic Movement offers another perspective on being witnessed, while Contact Improvisation explores relationship through physical contact. Each has its own history and learning process. Keeping those differences visible makes their conversation with Onizal more useful.
